Many of us are receiving telephone calls purporting to come from Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC) or our internet provider. These calls are often threatening and may be recorded messages or a live caller. The HMRC calls usually state that you are going to be taken to court, whilst the internet provider calls inform you that you will be disconnected.
In both cases you are invited to take some action (eg "Press 1 on your telephone") that will almost invariably result in you either having to pay a large sum of money or give your personal (i.e. banking) details away.
Calls such as these are recognised scams and should be terminated as soon as you realise that they are not genuine. Do not comply with any directions you are given. If you have concerns about your internet connection, you should contact your internet provider through their Customer Service number. HMRC will not contact you via telephone in the first instance.
