A home security checklist

A Checklist

In view of more recent burglaries, I would also like to take this opportunity to urge residents to follow security advice. Most burglars are opportunists whereby they notice that a window or door is insecure and decide to break in. By taking some simple precautions you can reduce your chances of becoming a victim of such a crime:

External security.
• Do you have working external security lighting?
• Is your garden fence in good condition?
• Is your garden fence high enough to make climbing over difficult?
• Are trees and shrubs outside your home trimmed well back?
• Do you have strong locks on your gates?

Garages and sheds. Often these are full of expensive tools ideal for breaking into the rest of the house – and are often left unlocked.
• Do you have strong locks on your shed or garage?
• If your garage is attached to your house, do you have deadlocks on any connecting door?
• Do you always lock tools and ladders away?
• Do you have an alarm fitted to your shed or garage?

Secure all windows. A proportion of burglaries are committed with the burglars entering properties through insecure windows.
• Are your windows and frames in good condition?
• Do your accessible windows (except those designated as a fire escape route) have locks with keys?
• Do you keep your windows locked whenever you leave the house?

Secure all doors. Remember, if your external doors are not secure, neither is your home.
• Do your external doors have a robust deadlock i.e. a lock that requires a key to move the bolt forward into the frame?
• Are your doors or frames free from damage caused by weathering or neglect?
• Are your external doors sufficiently strong to resist forced entry?
• Do you lock your external doors when you leave the property for even a few minutes?
• Do you lock your external doors at all times when you are at home?

Property marking
• Have you marked the valuable property in your home? This can be done using forensic markers such as Smart Water or Selecta DNA.
• Have you registered serial numbers of your mobile phone, computers, cameras, MP3 players and other equipment with a property register company such as Immobilise.com.?

If you require any assistance in marking property or with neighbourhood watch please contact your local Neighbourhood Policing Team on 101.
