I have received the following from Wiltshire Police and feel it is worth passing on:
"Over the past few weeks there have been a number of incidents in the Amesbury and South Wiltshire area. In these incidents elderly residents have been contacted by a carpet cleaning company offering cheap carpet cleaning. Once the carpet cleaning has been done, the initial price given to the householder has escalated considerably.
"Enquiries are being made by Wiltshire Police and Trading Standards into these allegations. Police advice is if you want carpets cleaned only use a reputable company you have used before and whose services and prices you are happy with. With any work done please ensure you get a receipt and do not sign any documents you cannot clearly read or understand.
"We ask any local residents who have had recent carpet cleaning, and are not happy with the services or sudden last minute price increase, to contact Wiltshire police and local trading standards. We further advise local residents not to hand over bank card details in these circumstances.
"If you have a carpet cleaning company turn up who you have asked NOT to attend your home contact Police immediately. People who have elderly neighbours please keep an eye on their callers if carpet cleaning companies turn up please enquire with your neighbour that they are happy with the company if you have any doubts ring the Police and Trading Standards."
