PRESS RELEASE

NEW TELEPHONE SCAM - "BEWARE"

The Wiltshire Police have received information relating to a new telephone scam, relating to both home and work telephones, and occasionally, mobiles.

Your phone rings and you receive a recorded message:-

" Congratulations, we are calling to advise you that you have won an all expenses paid trip to................................................ Please press 9 now to hear further details."

If you press 9 and connect, even if you disconnect immediately, the other end will stay connected for a minimum of 5 minutes - at a cost to you of £100; the message actually lasts for a total of 11 minutes.

The final part of the call asks you to key in your postcode and house number (this raises a number of other security issues) and then after a wait of a further 2 minutes. you will be greeted with:-

"Sorry, you are not one of the lucky winners." followed by automatic disconnection, leaving you with a huge telephone bill of £260.

British Telecom advise that these calls originate from outside the UK and as a result, they are powerless to act.

PLEASE BE CAREFUL, OTHERWISE CHRISTMAS WILL BE RUINED BY A £500 TELEPHONE BILL WHICH YOU CAN DO NOTHING ABOUT.
