My grandfather ,William Francis Snelgrove was born in 1866 in Duck street Sutton Veny son of a farm labourer, William Snelgrove(b1844) and Ellen Snelgrove(b1846) (nee Francis). They had a large family of 10 children: William (1866);Emily(1868);Tom(1870);Anna(1874);Frank(1875);Henry(1877);Mary-Jane(1880);Sarah(1881);Florence(1884);and George(1888).The family moved to 52,Sutton Street (in 1991 census)with 5 children at home.My Grandfather had left for London and lived in 23 Gt College Street St Pancras, London working in the Pub trade (1901 census). My Great great grandparents ran the High Street bakery with Frank Snelgrove(b1877) helping them(1901 census)
Anyone know any connections? Anyone know the history of 52,Sutton street or the bakery?Anyone know the exact cottage the Snelgroves lived in in Duck street?

Many thanks

Hello!
The name Snelgrove is quite common in these parts - but I cannot recall any in the village. The numbering of houses has probably changed since your references - 52 is a new house built behind High Bank (51).
The bakery is, I think, the house now called Fairview (36) - this was a shop when we moved to the village in 1969 run by the Lines/Elliott families.
"The Sutton Veny Book" compiled by Sutton Veny WI is quite informative but does not go back as far as the ancestors you mention.
Good luck in your researches!

Hi Barry

I have been tracing my family tree back since 1999, and have info for you on the snelgroves Your tree meets mine quite nicely William and Ellen Francis marry in st john the evangalist in 1865, his Father is William Snelgrove(1819) who marries Mary Ann Baker in 1840's. William (1819) father is William Snelgrove (1797) who was baptised in Norton Bavant. He married Sarah Grist. They had 4 children William(1819), Elizabeth(1826), George (1827) and Alfred (1832). Our lines meet here Elizabeth(1826) married Joseph Axford and they ran the Laundry and he was a road labourer. Their Children were Albert James, Lucy Emma, Sarah Anne, Lydia Louisa and Elizabeth. Mygreat great graandmother is lydia louisa Axford who married Edward John Penny (graves are in the church yard of St John the evangelist). The family originally came from Heytesbury and there is a plaque in the church dedicated to the family, graves are still visible back to the 1700's. I spent some time in spring going back up the vally tacing the remains of my families past. Unfortunately my data base went belly up but will be redoing it soon so will post a link as soon as it is done. Kindest regards Jyl Webster

Hi JW,

I am researching the Sutton Veny area for information on my long-lost half brother David. J. Webster who's father was Alfred J.Webster, who lived in Sutton Veny for some years, I believe up to 1970 or thereabouts.

I know that David married and had two daughters but lost contact with him and his family many years ago.

I wondered if you were, or knew of David at all.

Apologies if I am barking up the wrong tree.

Kind Regards,

Dan Webster.

Dan W.
I remember a David Webster from many years ago - he lived in Number 6 or 7 High Street. He left and I think rumour had it that he had gone abroad - ? Australia or NZ. Sorry not to have any more info.

JW, I have already been in telephone contact with Dan to update him. You are right, emigration was only as far as Shropshire!

Hi,
We may have a connection in our family trees, as I have Charlotte Potticary dob 1833 who married an Alfred Snelgrove dob 1830 in Sutton Veny on 27 March 1853. I know of 3 children born to them, Alfred in 1864, George 1871, Frank 1876. Do you have any of these people in your tree?
Regards
Gaye

Hi - new here! I live in canada now but spent the first 30 years in southern Engalnd and have been researching my tree. My 4x Great grandfather was William Snelgrove, born 1797 and lived in Sutton Veny most of his life with his wife Sarah (nee Grist). They had 5 children, one of which was Alfred who was born about 1830 (10 in the 1841 census) and who could well have been your Alfred who married Charlotte. The siblings of Alfred were William (born about 1821), Elisabeth (about 1826), George (my ancestor, about 1828) and Lydia (born about 1838). On one of my visits home I plan to go through Sutton veny and see what I can see in the churchyard. Always happy to know anything about the family, and the village history too!
