Maps of the WW1 camp/s?

Post by JohnSwan » Tue Jan 18, 2011 8:24 pm

I am writing up my Grandfathers WW1 diary and in it he talks about his time at Sutton Veny where he did some of his training in 1916. I would like to know if anyone has a map or maps of the area from that time or where I could at least get to look at one so I can try and understand a little more? I hope to visit the local area sometime later in the year as I would like to retrace at least some of his footsteps.

John,

Funny you should mention this as I was thinking last week I wonder where the location of each camp was. I have a rough idea as there are still piles of rubble now grassed over in some fields and a field has the name Hospital Field. I will do some digging (not literally !) and see what I can find out. It will take some time but will try and come back in due course.

Regards,

I wonder if the Imperial War Museum could help on this?

I have done some research on the locations of the camps in the local library.

There is now a map on the web site here: http://suttonveny.co.uk/1st-world-war.html that has the locations of the camps.
